A NEW PART OF THE SHOPPING JOURNEY
Recycling is about to become part of the consumer journey.
The new UK Deposit Return Scheme legislation adds a 20p refundable deposit to all eligible plastic and aluminium drinks containers. Consumers get the deposit back when they return and recycle the empty container to an approved convenience store or supermarket return point. (RPO).
With 26 billion drinks containers sold each year in the UK, millions of UK consumers will be returning to retail to recycle and claim back their deposits.
For brands, this creates a repeatable consumer touchpoint — at the moment someone is entering a retail environment and deciding what to buy next.

HOW DRS WORKS
Pay a small 20p deposit when you buy an eligible drink.
Enjoy your drink as normal.
Bring the empty container to an approved retail return point for recycling.
The container is validated and you receive your deposit back as cash or store credit.
You’re back in store, with an opportunity to make your next purchase.
Deposit refunds are separate from brand rewards. A further purchase is optional.
A NATIONAL OPPORTUNITY

The Deposit Return Scheme will create a nationwide network of return points, from mandated supermarkets and convenience stores to leisure, education, events and other voluntary locations.
A reason for return visits to local stores.
Industry research shows 87% of consumers spend their bottle deposit refund voucher as part of their next shop. DRS rules demand they can only spend their voucher in the store where they recycle.
A practical step towards a more circular future.
THE RETURN IS A NEW MEDIA MOMENT
Traditional retail media focuses on the journey towards purchase. DRS creates another journey, with Trovr Media at the return and reward stage.
